Innovation and growth seen for 2017
We are incredibly excited to announce the team to take the OC Percussion section to new heights in 2017 and beyond! We have assembled some of the finest, most experienced arrangers, designers, and educators in the activity. This group has over 100 years combined “doing the gig” at every level.
Love that signature aggressive, intricate, musical, and technical sound that OC is known for? So do we. Percussion has been a strength for us for years, and it’s no accident. If you love to play, then look no further than this STACKED crew.
Here is a quick rundown on what you can expect for 2017.
Returning for his 7th season as Battery Arranger and Percussion Caption Head is Portland native Mike Stevens. Over his 30 years in the activity, he has been involved in some of the most legendary ensembles in Drum Corps history. Mike is also the Director of our WGI Percussion Independent World ensemble, OC Indoor.
Front Ensemble Caption Supervisor and Arranger Dr. Christopher Whyte is also returning for his 7th season. Like Mr. Stevens, he is a local to the Portland area, and is an alum of the Cascades, Bluecoats, and Blue Devils. We are thrilled that Chris has taken on the added responsibility of Music Coordinator for 2017, a role he also fulfills with OC Indoor.
Henry Gillard returns for his third season and second as Battery Caption Manager. Henry marched with the Pacific Crest, Blue Devils, and RCC. Henry is a sought after percussion teacher in the Southern California area, and has been one of the most prolific snare drum performers in the activity for years.
Josiah Nelson, another Pacific Northwest native, joins us for his third year on staff. He marched with the Cascades, OC, OC Indoor, and Blue Stars on snare. Josiah teaches several schools and private lessons in the Portland and Vancouver area. Josiah is also the snare teacher for OCI, and has been instrumental in helping develop some of our best and brightest local talent.
Local bass drum guru Tarrin Neal returns for his 4th year on the percussion staff. He marched in OC and OCI for 11 years combined. Tarrin has been responsible for that incredible bass drum sound since 2014. He also is the Bass Drum Instructor for OC Indoor, as well as several of the areas top high school lines.
Joining us for his first season to assist with the Bass Drums is Texas native Aaron McCann. Aaron studied music at the University of North Texas, and was a marching member of the Glassmen and Boston Crusaders.
Returning for his 4th season as the Cymbal instructor is Charles “DJ” Carty. He marched with the Teal Sound, Spirit of Atlanta, and Music City Mystique. Charles is also the cymbal instructor for MCM, and has played a huge role in developing the Cymbals of OC into one of the most respected cymbal lines in the activity.
New additions to the staff are two well quite well known names in the Quad Drumming world – Michael Tant and Chris Drummer. Michael marched with the Carolina Crown and Rhythm X, and taught both Crossmen and RX. He is currently a percussion teacher in the Dayton, OH area and European X indoor. Chris marched in the Blue Devils (A and B corps), RCC, and Pulse and is on the instructional staff with RCC. Do a quick google search and you can see Chris still throwin’ down with the BYOS crew and friends.
Luke Dedominces returns as the Front Ensemble Caption Manager for his 4th season on staff. Luke marched with the Cascades, OCI, and Phantom Regiment. He is currently at the University of Oregon working towards his Masters in Percussion Performance, and is also the Front Ensemble Caption Manager for OC Indoor.
Rounding out the Front Ensemble team are master educators Jack Pronske and Shealley Lee. Jack was a member of the Madison Scouts and Phantom Regiment Front Ensemble, and has his Music Education Degree from the University of North Texas. Shealley was a member of the Cascades and Freelancers Indoor Front Ensembles, and is a highly sought after percussion teacher and arranger in the Northern California region.
