The Fight Song
As the corps was about to walk onto the field last night, I talked with them about fighting for every step, ever toss, every attack. Fight for everything. We’ve fought financially, mentally, physically to get where we are, and now we have to fight to make sure that the design and instruction of our program - which is truly worthy of world class - is recognized and rewarded. I asked them to fight, and they went onto that field last night and clawed their way right into the top echelon of Open Class.
In the big picture, World Class is now competitive only if you have150 players, and technical execution is often rewarded over expression. We have a chance to be the “David” to that Goliath. Open class is supposed to reward smaller corps. Open class is supposed to reward corps that take creative risks. Open class is supposed to reward corps that focus on creative expression. If our members continue to fight their way up, we will test whether or not the theory of Open class holds true. We all need to fight for it. We don’t have 60 brass players or 30 colorguard. We don’t have the name recognition. So we just have to fight harder.
There will be things that go wrong during the season. There always are. But with an ounce of common sense and a pound of grit, and with all of us fighting together, I know we can get it done.
OC is having a great week of rehearsal before the big tour. We hope you’ll stay behind us all the way.
Phil
