GREETINGS! Thank you for taking the time to listen to a fellow service member. As I get ready to deploy with my AZ Nat Guard Public Affairs Detachment, it's nice to know we have the support back here at home.

I helped Rick Wise get things started for OC in 2000. I taught brass, m&m, guard, drove a truck, gopher, etc. Some of the horns you started with were probably mine.

My Drum Corps "days" (BK 84-86) prepared me for basic training and the military both physically; and more importantly....mentally.

Please feel free to visit my site: http://rogerbemis.multiply.com/ and my units site: http://123rdmpad.multiply.com/.

Any OC corps member, staff, or volunteer may freely contact me anytime by phone(until we actually deploy in the fall) or email(even while deployed).

GOOD LUCK

Very nice, Phil! I enjoyed this. My son, Jake Epperly (OC 2007 Bass Drum #2) is currently stationed in North Dakota in training, but will be sent overseas eventually. I'm glad that "Adam" touched you so deeply, and that you shared this experience here. May we hold up all the "Adams", male and female, in prayer and gratitude!

Very good to hear about your conversation. It is so important to speak about this with those who are there and to hear the stories and understand to some degree what is happening there.

But extremely sad that men and women are overseas fighting, losing their lives, losing their limbs, coming home with psychological damage all for propaganda purposes. It is so disheartening for me to see our soldiers go to these places and be told they are fighting for freedom and democracy and to eliminate terrorism, when it is so far from the truth.

Get your phacts right, Dr. Phil!

OC started out as a drumline clinic around 1999 that became the Southern Oregon Crusaders, first touring in 2000 (Playing the music of Ricky Martin). The corps didn't move to Portland until 2002 (St. Helens, actually). I only know one person who did OC from 2000 to 2004 and that's Brian Mudget, a member of the pit who aged out in '04, my second year. Of course, the oldest vet still around is Tyler Raymond ('02-'05,'08), though I'm also in contact with a few other people who marched in '02.

Welcome to the blogosphere, Phil! I agree with you that we should further embrace the impact of family and community in achieving life goals through optimal health.

The recent Pew Internet & American Life survey last week (see http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/231/report_display.asp) asked about getting information from others, and the Edelman Trust Barometer from 2006 demonstrated that "a person like me" is more trusted than a physician. In an ideal health system, these will be mutually supportive rather than exclusive of each other.

So let's make it happen!
